What Is the Burke Youth Soccer and Basketball Assistance Program?
Not all the young people in Burke Centre who would like to play organized
sports can do so. Some need equipment, such as shoes, shorts, or shin guards.
Others need transportation to practice and to games.
The Burke Youth Soccer Assistance Program provides equipment and transportation
for those young people of our community who need them in order to play
organized soccer.
How Was the Burke Youth Soccer and Basketball Assistance Program
Born?
The young players on some Burke teams had a custom of taking up a collection
at the end of each season, to buy themselves plaques, trophies, and so
on. Then some of these young players decided that, instead of collecting
money for themselves, they would collect it for people in poor countries.
On further consideration, they decided that there were poor people nearby,
in Washington, who needed help. And on still further consideration, they
decided that there might be young people here in our own community who
couldn't afford to play organized sports without help. So they turned their
project into one of helping their young neighbors who needed assistance
in order to participate in organized youth sports.
